The 2017 Honda Civic Type R: even more impressive than we originally thought

The Honda Civic Type R was unveiled as a prototype last September at the Paris Motor Show

The Honda Civic Type R was unveiled as a prototype last September at the Paris Motor Show, but then we had to wait six months before knowing more about its specifications and whether the final production version would be just as impressive from a design point of view as the concept presented in Paris.

After the official presentation of the all-new 2017 Honda Civic Type R at the Geneva Motor Show a few weeks ago, we now know a lot more about Honda’s new flagship performance model. And you know what? Most will agree that the new Civic Type R is even more impressive than previously imagined.

2017 Honda Civic Type R: a car designed for the track

Honda's new-generation performance car will be very powerful and its chassis has been designed from the very beginning to provide outstanding rigidity which will come in handy on the track. That said, the 2017 Honda Civic Type R was also designed to serve as a daily driver thanks to three driving modes that can change the car’s entire personality. Let's take a closer look.

The 2017 Honda Civic Type R will be powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and not a CVT gearbox as several rumors suggested recently. The manual gearbox in question will feature rev matching, and the clutch’s inertia has been reduced by 25% in order to optimize the efficiency of the gearbox.

Power will be sent to the front wheels where a limited slip differential will focus on optimizing handling and reducing torque steer. The 2017 Honda Civic Type R starts as a Honda Civic Hatchback, but under the aggressive body of the Type R we find a host of suspension and damping improvements that share nothing with the Hatchback model. It is also a lot stiffer, while also being lighter by about 16 kilos.

A customizable 2017 Honda Civic Type R

On the other hand, Honda wanted to make sure that it would be possible to drive the Civic Type R on a daily basis and thus the Japanese manufacturer built in three driving modes that can radically change the car’s personality. These modes adjust the suspension's firmness as well as the performance of the engine, steering, gearbox and traction and stability control systems to provide a more comfortable, sporty, or track-focused ride according to the owner’s needs.

The 2017 Honda Civic Type R will be built in England, and will be offered at just over $ 40,000 according to Honda. Come and learn more about the new Civic Type R today at Civic Motors!
