2017 Honda Civic vs 2017 Mazda3: everything is in the price

Published on May 30 2017

When we are looking for a compact sedan, there are a lot of options available to us, starting with the 2017 Honda Civic.

When we are looking for a compact sedan, there are a lot of options available to us, starting with the 2017 Honda Civic. The Honda Civic has been the best-selling car in Canada for nearly 20 years, and much of its success can be attributed to its ability to meet the needs of a host of consumers with its impressive balance, legendary reliability, incredible fuel economy, and tremendous resale value.

That said, it also provides a ton of value, and that's what allows it to stand out against models that seem more affordable on paper, like the 2017 Mazda3, for example. The latter is available starting at $ 15,900 while the 2017 Honda Civic is available starting at $ 16,490. On paper, therefore, the 2017 Honda Civic seems a little more expensive, but the paper does not always tell the whole story.

More equipment in the 2017 Honda Civic compared to the 2017 Mazda3

The 2017 Honda Civic offers a standard rear-view camera and the Bluetooth system. In the 2017 Mazda3, this equipment requires an additional $ 2,650, which brings the total price for a Mazda3 equipped like the entry-level Civic to $ 18,550, or $ 2,060 more.

The Civic is also offered as an LX version which adds the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems as well as heated seats. The Honda Civic LX is available starting at $ 19,390 with the manual transmission, and $ 20,690 with the continuously variable automatic transmission. To have the heated seats in the Mazda3, you have to opt for the limited-edition SE model that is available from $ 20,850 with the manual transmission, or the Mazda3 GS offered starting at $ 20,300 with the manual. And none of these Mazda models offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

We note the same thing when looking at driver assistance technologies. For example, the Honda Civic LX with Honda Sensing offers intelligent cruise control, lane departure prevention, collision warning and automatic braking, all starting at $ 21,690 with the automatic transmission. To get substantially the same safety equipment in the Mazda3, you have to look to the Mazda3 GT which is offered starting at $ 24,000 and then add an option group worth $ 2,900.

In short, the 2017 Mazda3 is a very good car, but with regard to value and what it gives you for your money, it is not able to compete with the 2017 Honda Civic.
